What treaty does the use of torture in the war on terror violate?

By tascerUSA

I seem to recall that there is a specific treaty that the U.S violated with the use of torture in the war on terror. What treaty is it?

The Geneva Convention. But a 2004 Memo by the administration says: It permits the CIA to take Iraqis out of the country to be interrogated for a “brief but not indefinite period.” It also says the CIA can permanently remove persons deemed to be “illegal aliens” under “local immigration law.” Most specialists in international law say the memo violates one of the most basic rights of the Geneva Convention. During the war in Afghanistan, the administration ruled that al Qaeda fighters were not considered “protected persons” under the convention. Many of them were transferred out of the country to the naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and elsewhere for interrogations. By contrast, the U.S. government deems former members of Saddam Hussein’s Baath Party and military, as well as insurgents and other civilians in Iraq, to be protected by the Geneva Conventions. Most legal experts are disturbed by the violations of the Geneva conventions. The former administration had a policy of ignoring laws they found inconvenient.

Some people feel the Geneva Convention does not apply because the combatants were not wearing uniforms. I honestly do not understand that argument. Who cares what they are wearing? We still have an obligation to give all people basic human rights. I don’t care what crimes they committed. We still need to have a higher standard.

The Gathering of Mustangs & Legends
“The Final Roundup”
Rickenbacker International Airport
Columbus, Ohio
Friday September 28, 2007

IN THIS VIDEO, watch as one jumper exits from the Cessna 182 jump aircraft and deploys the american flag while the national anthem is played. The jumper is being circled by the four PT-17 Stearmans of the Red Baron Squadron, and as he makes his decent upon Rickenbacker International Airport, a flight of three P-51 Mustangs makes a pass down the show line (behind the flag) to help open up the Friday show. The jumper featured in the video is Paul McCowan, the founder of the E Team Skydivers, based in Ohio. His site is at http://www.eteamskydivers.com . Please direct all e-mails regarding any performances to Paul and make sure to tell him I sent you.

Paul McCowan also performed the opening ceremonies flag jump at the 2008 Joint Services Open House at Andrews AFB. You can view that jump at http://youtube.com/watch?v=2RDmLYRgB3k .

Whats the difference between Nationalism and Patriotism?

By tascerUSA

How is patriotism not related to terrorism?

I need this for a debate so please help!

http://www.randomhouse.com/wotd/index.pperl?date=20011002

patriotism can be defined simply as 'love and loyal support of one's country'. Yes, it's centered in feeling–and, as we've seen in past weeks, the emotion is deep and intense.

But when people take patriotism to a fanatic extreme, this is usually called nationalism. (The terms jingoism and chauvinism are near synonyms.) Nationalism is more centered in thought than in feeling; it's actually a political and social philosophy. The Columbia Encyclopedia defines it as "a collective state of mind or consciousness in which people believe their primary duty and loyalty is to the nation-state. Often nationalism implies national superiority and glorifies various national virtues. Thus love of nation may be overemphasized; concern with national self-interest to the exclusion of the rights of other nations may lead to international conflict." So, because nationalism is the belief that national interests and security are more important than international considerations, it often goes hand in hand with a militaristic foreign policy. It also tends to encourage cultural conformity and intolerance.
