How much of our freedom did the patriot act take away?

By tascerUSA

I heard that the patriot act took away some of our freedom and replaced it with security.
The patriot act said that the U.S. Government can tap your phone to hear conversation you have to figure out whether you are a terrorist or not. What if I'm doing other illegal activity and they tap me can they used that as evidence? Also if our government doesn't trust us, should we trust them, with all this 911 controversy, I really don't know.
I am a US Citizen.
That is a great quote. My sociology professor mentioned that quote last week.
I oppose the patriot act, its unconstitutional.

If you give up freedom for security you deserve neither.

Not that much if you are a US citizen. For citizens, the most controversial part was that it took away some privacy, as the government could wire tap without telling you (if you were a suspected terrorist). Most of the other parts applied only to immigrants. As an American, I was glad to have the Patriot Act to protect us when we needed it. Unlike what our current president has done to keep the country safe…

    Our right to privacy

With the "Patriot act" the government could listen to whatever phone call they wanted without a warrant. If somebody believes that it isn't open for abuse than they are insane

Only terrorists have to worry about the Patriot Act. The Act has no effect on patriots.

You should watch the movie "Zeitgeist" (German for "Signs of the Times). Here's the link: http://www.zeitgeistmovie.com/

According to the documentary, all of your civil rights have been taken away by the US government. Under the Patriot Act, you can be arrested without a warrant. You can even be detained against your will if the US government suspects you're a terrorist even if there's no evidence to support the detention.

In short, you've been screwed by your own government.
